South Island Club Time Trial Championship -  Saturday 4th September 2010 - By Steve Havard
1 Southland 28 points, 2 Otago 16 points, 3 Wakatipu 3 points

Cold wintry conditions on Saturday resulted in the senior time trial events being shortened from 40kms back to 25kms. Highlight of the day was an excellent time in spite of the conditions by the Otago senior quartet of Shane Melrose, Alex McGregor, Scott Lyttle and Joe Chapman to convincingly win the senior division event in a time of 33 mins 56 secs over 25kms.
Equally impressive was the ride by the Otago Master's combination led by Mark Spessot, Chris Henderson, Brendon Hastie and Paul Gough who won their respective grade in 35 mins 32 secs, 1 minute 18 secs clear of the Southland team with only a further 2 secs back to the Otago Gold team.
Southland strength in the junior divisions was evident with the Under 19 combination featuring Dillon Bennett, Marcel Baird, Brehan Cairns and Kirk Hamilton recording a smart 36 min 28 sec time in the cold conditions. The number of Southland junior teams was the difference in Southland winning the Caldwell Trophy from Otago.
Wakatipu had only one team in action on Saturday but impressed when winning the junior under 17 Boy's category with the team of Tom Vessey, Liam Aitcheson, George Blackie and Ryan Mackay.

Stott wins his second race of season
- Saturday 27th August 2010 - Steve Harvard

Justin Stott took out the sprint finish from Paul Gough on the 'World Famous' Wingatui Circuit. Cat 1 had a well contested race, with all riders getting involved in the action, back in the peleton it was good to see Chris Harvey after several months off the bike due to injury. A number of attacks occurred but no-one managed to get far ahead during the main part of the race with a swirling wind making it tough out the front. Glen Todd burst away with 1 lap remaining of the 7 lap race and gained a 10 second advantage before a slow puncture in his rear wheel slowed him down somewhat allowing the rest the ability to catch him, however coming into the sprint Todd had just enough air remaining in his tyre to wind up the sprint into final straight. Justin Stott jumped from fifth position into the lead with 200 metres remaining with Paul Gough tucked on his wheel. With a slight uphill and cross wind making for a tough finish Gough just couldn't come over Stott allowing Stott to take his second win of the season. It was a win for Tony Chapman in the Cat 2 race who broke away early in the race with another rider, having then taken a lap on the front he found himself on his own. Over the course of the race he built himself a lead of a few minutes over the chasers and took out the win with the 'ride of the day'. Chapman's secret erg sessions are starting to take effect, with the old master of the road starting to get some serious form! He took out the win from Kat Jones and Stevie Grant.
In the Cat 3 race Therese Duncan took the honours from Bill Murphy and Mary Grey in third place over the line.
Dave McLeod continued his dominance of the Cat 4/5 catergory taking first spot from George Evans.
Some other Otago riders headed south, and performed well in the big southland race of the season, the Invercargill Memorial 100. Shane Melrose and Mark Spessot dominated the scratch bunch, with Spessot making an early break by himself, before being caught by Melrose and two remaining scratch riders from Invercargill. Melrose powered home or fastest time but with 56 minutes handicap they never got near the front. Emma Sutherland did though - and rode a brilliant race to finish a very creditable fourth across the line.

Cycle Surgery Power to Victory over Ricoh
- Sat 21st August 2010

1 minute 34 seconds separated the Cycle Surgery Time Trial Team in the Otago Champs this weekend over the newly formed Ricoh racing team on the gruelling Outram 40 km course. Usual rivals became team mates this weekend ahead of the South Island Time trial championships that are to be held in Invercargill early September. The 2 laps of the 40 km course had a howling headwind after the turn at 10km and 30km sapping the energy out of the exhausted athletes some of which found the pace set by the rest of the team too much. Three riders have to finish the race and within 10km Gary Gardner found his team mates blistering pace too much. On the other hand the Ricoh team of Glen Todd, Justin Stott, Stu Crooks and Kyle Cameron worked well together and had the ‘ride of the day’ according to Life Member Barry Ellis keeping in a tight quartet until the finish. However the three remaining riders of the Cycle Surgery Team of Paul Gough, Mark Spessot and Brendon Hastie managed to keep ahead of their closest rivals by just over half a minute. Kevin Thomson, Emma Masterton, Chris Harvey finished agonisingly over the magical 1 hour time by a mere 3 seconds. The Chapman Consultancy Team who actually began with 5 riders was reduced to 3 with Tony Chapman keeping the tempo high they finished 51 seconds further behind. The team of Glenda Bruce, Lorraine Stewart, Robyn Cameron and Tom Campbell had a great ride to finish in 5th place.
The Juniors of Jonathon Atfield, Lockie McGregor and Daniel Cresswell displayed great teamwork working together all with different abilities to complete their 20km race.

Stott rockets to victory
- Saturday 14 August 2010 - By Glen Todd
After three laps of the 19km Sams block, Justin Stott turned on the after burners with 200 meters remaining and blasted clear to win by ten metres from Laurence Holding and Patrick Jones in category 1 of the Cycling Otago 57km massed start on Saturday.
Contested in cold, blustery conditions attempted breakaways by riders on laps 1 and 2 were quickly thwarted by the combined category 1 and 2 bunch. Most seemed content to work together and wait until the final lap, when the pace turned on, and their legs had finally warmed up.
Kyle Cameron, Andy Connelly and Patrick Jones all forced the pace in the tail to cross wind with 10km remaining but could not break the bunch. With 4km left Cameron had another go and gained a two hundred metre gap on the bunch.
Patrick Jones and Aaron Bleakley both tried to jump across, and Cameron was finally reeled in with less than 1km to go. Laurence Holding then accelerated to the front and was first around the final corner to make an early dash for the line with Patrick Jones and Stott on his wheel. The fast finishing Stott jumped ahead with 200m remaining whilst Holding, back from a few months off, held off Jones for a creditable second place.
In Category 2, wily veteran Kevin Thomson stayed in close proximity to the category 1 finishers, and sprinted well to keep the consistent Neil Derbyshire at bay, with Brent McCormack in close quarters, for third place.
Cat 3 saw Leo O’Brien take a well deserved victory ahead of Nick Johansson in a hotly contested race. The hardy Dave McLeod, took yet another win in Cat 4, ahead of David Stott and Barry Munro. In the junior race Daniel Creswell rode hard for the entire 19km journey and gained a superb victory ahead of Lachie McGregor and Denton Hayward.
Local masters rider Mark Spessott finished a creditable third place in the elite category of the national Benckmark Homes Series in Christchurch on Sunday, hurting a few younger legs along the way. Spessott retains his lead in the Masters competition.

Chapman makes it two in a row
- Saturday 24th July 2010 - By Steve Harvard
Joe Chapman made it two in a row this weekend in the Otago Knitwear points race. This new exciting course tested the riders with a sprint at the end of every lap and then a hill finish heading out to Middlemarch. Patrick Jones tried his luck against the Cat 1 field half way around the first Woodside circuit, this ‘set of a flurry of attacks’ said Chapman. Chapman, Mark Spessot and Alex McGregor found themselves ahead of the field but they were joined by Jones, Justin Stott and Logan Edgar. As the laps and sprints went by the placings on the road were close, it was down to the hill climb finish to determine the winner. Spessot pushed the pace up the hill but as the 200m mark greeted the riders Chapman made his move taking the win from Spessot and Edgar.
There was no hanging around in the Cat 2 race this weekend Tony Chapman kept on attacking all race. Dave Hedley took out the first 2 sprints from reliable finisher Kevin Thomson, on the third lap Hedley had done some chasing down of the numerous attacks from Thomson, Chapman and Andy Connelly. As the sprint came Connelly took the win from Thomson taking his third second place. Hedley failed to score any points. As lap four went by there was attack after attack, Thomson’s’ persistence paid off taking the win from Connelly. It was off towards the hill or to some a mountain, Steve Havard knowing of his inabilities to climb attacked the field and had a lead of 50 meters at the foot of the climb that was soon gone with Connelly in his prime on the hills. At the top of the climb Connelly got the decisive points to take the overall win, hard working Murray Grey went over the line in second place. Cooper led the ladies up the hill and took out third place up the hill and Queen of the Mountains. Thomson had done enough on the flat to take second place from Hedley in third.
The hill climb was so important to 3 riders in the Cat 3 race as they were all in joint second place behind Chris Ross who had a commanding lead over the field. Bill Murphy was second over the climb behind in form Ross who had won all three sprints and the hill climb. Mike Harris took out third place from Leo O Brien as he was third up the hill. Amelia Kinnard took out the Queen of the Mountain title.
Dave McLeod won the Cat 4 and 5 handicap race from Glenda Bruce in second. George Evans stayed ahead of wife Carol this week to take third.
In the junior race it was a battle to the last sprint Bailey Coppert-Duggan taking the win from Denton Hayward by 2 points.
It was then off to the prize giving for stories of how they won or why they did not win!

Chapman takes out Winter Season Opener
- Saturday 17th July 2010.

With a break from racing for a few weeks and riders avidly watching the Tour de France the racing in Cat 1 was straight into full race pace from the gun. It was attack after attack around the short yet taxing 6km Wingatui Circuit. Riders have to anticipate the acceleration out of the corners to hold onto their respective groups. Alex McGregors paid the price from his constant attacking style finding the pace too much at the end dropping off the pace. On the penultimate lap the field split into smaller groups and as the finish line approached Chapman made a move on Shane Melrose who was leading out the sprint. Chapman took the honours from Melrose with Mark Spessot taking third. Rider of the day was Justin Stott who came out with a very commendable 4th place.
The Cat 2 riders were more wondering how the legs were going to last around the severn laps they faced. As the laps passed by the speed increased both Mark Deacon and Andy Connelly had attacks to try and break the field. With 2 ╜ laps to go and heading back towards Mosgiel Deacon and Connelly got away they were joined by some other strong riders. This caused the decicive break in the race, galaiant efforts from Emma Masterton and the other chases were not enough to catch the front group. As the race approached the 500m to go mark Deacon made his move, Neil Derbyshire got onto his wheel and managed to out sprint him for the line, always there at the finish was Kevin Thomson taking out third place from back on the bike Pascal Sutherland.
The Cat 3 race and the junior race was combined but no one was allowed to get away from the pack, it came down to a sprint finish, Joel DavisÆ legs seized up coming into the finishing straight allowing Mike Harris to take out the first win of the season and Bill Murphy kept ahead of third place Jan Mclellend.
Logan Jenkins was first over the line in the junior race.
Cat 4 and 5 had a handicap race with Carol Evans again beating husband George who got third with Dave Mcleod securing second place.
The weekends racing was finished off with a pot luck dinner back at the velodrome and the cycling fever continues next week with the Otago Kntwear points race.

Riddel keeps sprinters at bay -
 by Steve Havard - 15 May 2010
A class field of from around the country including Olympians , NZ representatives and 'weekend warriors' lined up for the 9th James Faulding Memorial Handicapp race. Scratch had 35 minutes of the 65km course to catch the front of the race. With riders in the middle of the race been set off only a few minutes apart it came apparent to second break they had to go out hard and try to catch up the other groups asap just to try and stay away from the chasers behind. By the top of Woodside the middle mark had caught second limit and after a huge effort by Andrew Riddel heading back towards Outram the three groups came together and by Outram the limit riders had been caught, it was race on. Working quite well together the pace was high, which it had to be if they had any chance of staying away. When a wheel was dropped or the pace slowed it was Riddel, Falcous, Smit, Peacock and myself forcing the legs to go that little bit faster. At the bottom of Woodside a glance behind by the group could not see any riders behind not that they were still not chasing. The ups and downs from Outram sapped the strength from all the riders. With the final turn up false flat of Tirohanga Road maybe the group could stay away, but the cat and mouse started too early again Riddel and co went to the front pushing out every last effort. As the line approached Riddel's strength eased him off the front of the group, with no one having the power to chase Riddel he took out a deserved victory from sprinter Stu Thomas in second who is the only rider to complete in all the races. Kevin Thomson showed he still had a 'kick' at the end coming in third. Two and a half minutes back came Break who had held off the onslaught from the Scratch group. Though Scratch was still racing for fastest time and a further three minutes back Olympian Mark Ryan took out the sprint from Brad Evans and Scott Lyttle respectively.  Results PDF

Podium finishes for Otago at Road Cycling Nationals
- By Glenda Bruce - 4 May 2010
A smaller than usual contingent of riders from Otago travelled to Hastings for this years Road Nationals. Overall entries for this year’s event was a record number with 380 riders competing in the Time Trial.
It was a testing course with an uphill return, warm temperatures and a stiff head wind. Alysha Keith maintained her consistent record in gaining a silver medal, as did Jan Brosnahan in the Womens master’s grade. Patrick Jones also produced an outstanding performance being placed 12th . This was Jone’s first year in the under 19 category and his time was the 4th fastest time in the group of boys that competed in this category for the first year.
Corinne Smit was placed 17th in the time trial, and went on to gain a credible 4th place in Sundays Senior Womens road Race. This was Smit’s first time riding at National level.
The Road race circuit was another challenging course, technical, hilly and windy which lead to a high number of DNF’s throughout the day.
A exciting sizzling sprint finish in the Masters Women’s road race resulted in Jan Brosnhan taking gold for Otago. Brosnahan got away in a small break away group, winning the sprint from Lesley Mouat of Masterton and Lynda Goldsack Counties Manukau.
In the Senior Mens race the field was decimated again by the conditions and Scott Lyttle rode a gutsey race finishing in 7th place out of a big field of 39 riders. Gordon McCauley of Counties Manakau took the honours. Cycling Otago’s Logan Edgar and Andrew MacKay showed their class in being part of the break away bunch in another big field of riders that saw them finish 8th and 12th respectively in the under 23 grade race.

Melrose takes out headwind sprint
- By Steve Havard - 25 April 2010
It took 72 km of the 80km Greenhall memorial handicapp race for the Scratch group to catch the front riders, with Shane Melrose powering into the headwind finish to take the win. Riders had started off with a fantastic tailwind down Huntley road heading towards the gruelling Berwick Block circuit which they then navigated around 3 times before returning back to the Outram finish. Riders who maybe hadn't warmed up enough found the fast start too much and some riders fell off there respective groups. It seemed the wind was against the riders from some direction all the way around the Berwick block, it wasn't until the second accent of the Berwick climb that the middle group could plainly see the Break group hot on there heels. Replenishing fluilds and food they waited for them to catch, unbeknown to them Scrtach were just behind and on the way to Centre Road the three groups joined up. The turn into the Centre road head wind for the 2rd time started to see riders tiring. The left back towards Mungatua Road the pace went on again and those who were unable to match the pace found themselves in a group of there own. The Scratch bunch continued at pace still having to catch the front of the race. At the right turn back towards Outram and into a stiff headwind Scratch seized there chance knowing the front of the race would be tiring, the pace went up again and with 8kms to go they reached the front of the race where Melrose took out the win in the bunch sprint.

Benchmark series race number two held in Hokitika - By Glenda Bruce - 24 April 2010
The prestigious road cycling event is acknowledged as New Zealand’s premier road cycling competition and is likened to  the European-style of race series made up of teams .  It promotes in its objectives  to  identify the competition’s most consistent rider and team from the accumulation of points, and it provides  grounding for aspiring professionals who one day hope to compete in the Tour de France.
Round two named the Beachfront Hotel Classic was held in Hokitika.  The undulating 136km course comprised of several sharp hills.  One hundred and seventeen starters began with a brisk pace, driven by the one hundred dollar sprint prime.  Kumho Tyres riders Brad Evans and Logan Edgar both spent some time up the front with this in mind but with the fast pace, neither remained there long.  Chad Adair of the Bikeright team was the prime winner after Bikeright got their lead out train working well at the front.  The first accent of the main hill was also a fast one with the King of the Mountain prize of one hundred dollars up for the first rider over the hill.  Josh Atkins from the Benchmark Team was the one to take the cash.
Throughout the race a number of teams were active in trying to establish a breakaway. Just before the half way mark a dangerous break escaped off the front.  A number of teams had missed the move resulting in a prolonged chase. Ultimo Team riders comprising of Otago’s  Joe & Anthony Chapman & Andy MacKay worked hard the front and the break group was caught, bringing the bunch back together for the second last accent of the main hill.
Otago rider Scott Lyttle from the Cycle Surgery Team and four others launched another aggressive attack which quickly established a 40 second gap.  Brad Evans bridged across to the break away on his own and managed to hold on until the final  hill only to be dropped by the five remaining riders.  The five riders worked well together to hold off the chasing bunch.  Lyttle was disadvantaged being left with the two Benchmark riders and was forced to cover their attacks in the final kilometres of the race before the sprint.
Break kept away, finishing less than a minute ahead of the bunch with Josh Atkins taking honours and Lyttle making do with fifth place.  Evans set up the lead out, making an opportunity for Otago’s Shane Melrose to take sixth place.  Joe Chapman finished ninth, Paul Gough 18thand Brad Evans 19th.  Otago’s Mark Spessot of the Cycle Surgery Team finished in the main bunch.  Spessot still holds the Masters leaders jersey for the series. Scott Lyttle now sits third overall in the Category 1 division following the second round.
The next race, round 3 is on 9th May beginning at Hamner to Kaikoura.

Duncan digs deep to secure win in Shiel Hill Handicap
- By Glenda Bruce - Saturday 27th March 2010

It was the Shiel Hill Handicap 60km race on Saturday. It was an ‘up hill and down dale’ course, beginning at Vauxhall Yacht Club, down to the turnaround at the Albatross Colony and turning up the high road at Portobello to finish at the top of Sheil Hill. This was Maaike Duncan’s first win in one of the bigger races on the Cycling Otago calendar and since taking up cycling a year ago, she has gone from strength to strength. Duncan was part of the group setting off at second limit made up of Jan Brosnahan, Richard Redmond, Colton Lambert and Tina Bayer. Second Limit were off five minutes after Limit and they lapped it out well together on the outward leg to the Colony turnaround. Once on the high road and grinding it out up the menacing steepness and twists and turns, the group of Duncan, Lambert and Brosnahan found they had dropped 3 riders. The three caught four of the five Limit riders a third of the way up the hill and further on to Penzance where the hill flattens out they caught the last tiring Limit rider Rangi Wharepapa. Nearing the rise at Centre road Duncan made a break and created a gap that Lambert and Brosnahan didn’t respond to immediately. Seeing the gap widening, the two riders gave chase after Duncan down the hill. With a little over a kilometre to left in the race the two riders finally caught Duncan up as she neared the finishing pads. Duncan won in a gritty finish over Lambert for second. Duncan’s time was 1:43:44. Brosnahan was third.
Scratch riders Loz Holding and Peter Oakden found the going hard on their mission to pursue Break and they never really made ground on them with Break being a bigger bunch and they also remained together, as did Second Break until they hit the high road where the hill sorted the riders out in taking a toll on the legs. Within these two bigger bunches the riders split up and Break eventually caught some Second break riders nearer the top of the hill. Although that did not include Stu Crooks, Andrew Maffey, last weeks winner of the Chris Tudor Memorial, and nor did it include Mark Hogg. The three escaped the chasing riders with Hogg finishing in eighth place and also with fastest time of 1:.28:12 beating Stu Crooks to the fastest time by fifteen seconds.
Rangi Wharepapa was 4th 1.44.31 Richard Redmond 5th Tina Bayer 6th, Tom Campbell 7th and Graeme Glidden 9th
Category 4/5 was a handicap race from the Vauxhall Yacht club finishing at the Albatross Colony. Carole Evans and Yvonne Coughlin rode off Limit and the Scratch group set off 8 minutes later. Carol Evan won with Dave McLeod second and fastest time and Glenda Bruce third.
1st Carole Evans, 2nd Dave McLeod (fastest time), 3 Glenda Bruce

Maffey wins Tudor Memorial race
- By Glenda Bruce - 20 March 2010
Andrew Maffey won the 68km Chris Tudor Memorial race on Saturday in a time of 2 hours four minutes and fifty five seconds. Maffey was one of the six break riders that set off five minutes behind Limit. Break riders, Maffey, Maaike Duncan, Jan Brosnahan, Graeme Glidden, Rangi Wharepapa and Tom Campbell worked well as a group and caught Limit halfway round the first lap of the Sams circuit and this group remained together. Duncan broke away for a short time but was quickly reeled in again before reaching McLeod road. By the time the group went through Outram, Maffey then started testing the bunch a bit until the turnoff to Tirohanga Road in pushing off the front a few times. Once onto Tirohanga road and realising by then that some of the other riders were tiring, he decided he needed to get away from the bunch then, as the steep Mount Allen Hill was looming a couple of kilometres down the road. Encouraging Wharepapa to go with him Wharepapa did but was unable to stay with him. The remaining group were unable to catch Maffey and with assistance from the slight westerly tail wind down Tirohanga road to the turnoff to Mount Allen Road, he knew then he had the race in the box, finishing strongly on the steep incline. Maffey has in the past competed in several multisport events, however in road cycling this was his first handicap race. His other placing was his win in the Octagon Criterium C grade race in 2008.
Mark Spessot from the Scratch Group that started thirty minutes behind Limit was hot on the heels of this group and came in tenth in 2:08.32
Limit rider Richard Redmond was second in a time of 2:05.46, Jan Brosnahan third in 2:06, Maaike Duncan fourth in 2:06.16 Graeme Gliddon fifth in 2:06.33 Rangi Wharepapa sixth in 2:06.57 Dave McLeod seventh 2:07.33. McLeod who found himself short on drink during the race did well on the hill top finish with the temperature climbing to 24 degrees as most riders were finishing the race.

Otago ranks high in medal score for Raboplus Track Nationals -
By Glenda Bruce - 7 March 2010

All the Otago riders competing in the Track National Age Group Championships 2010 extend a huge thank you to Steve Hurring, Chris Keith, Stu Thomas, Barry Ellis, Mike Lormans, Bob Jones and Gary Gardiner for the time they spent setting the systems in place, organising and supporting the riders in this event. It was a big week for these guys.
Cycling Otago made it’s presence known in the Raboplus National Age group Track Championships at the Invercargill Velodrome held over four days with eleven Centres competing for National titles. Up until the final day of racing on Saturday, Otago was third place in overall points until the later part of the day when Canterbury in their last bid for a place nudged themselves into third place leaving Otago to make do in fourth place on the Table. Southland was first and won the shield with a fifty point margin over Auckland for second place.
Alysha Keith made a big contribution to the Otago Team when she added another 4 medals to her private collection. Keith, a talented rider and newly recruited member to the Academy of Sport’s Development programme broke the national record in the qualifying ride of the under 17 Girls 2000m Individual Pursuit and went on to win gold in the final. Keith also won the 5km Scratch race final, second in the Under 17 Girls Time Trial and third in the Points race.
Some stunning performances were displayed by Brad Evans when he won gold in the under 19 3000m Individual Pursuit, silver in the points race and silver in the 1000m time trial final. This may see him eligible for the New Zealand junior team for the world championships later in the year. Evans was also part of the team to claim gold in the 4000m Team Pursuit final and gold in the team sprint final where he combined forces with Matt Noble ( West Coast North Island) and Eli Edmonds mid-south Canterbury.
Charlotte Kelly had a golden night in the third day of her schedule in an exciting race when she won the gold in the Keririn final. Kelly also paired up with Amy Ferguson (mid sth Canterbury to claim silver in the Under 19 team sprint final. The other under 19 junior rider Patrick Jones was a member of the 4000 Pursuit Team that won silver in the 4000m composite Pursuit Team Team.
Geoff Keogh wasn’t coming home empty handed either as he firmly secured gold in the Mens Masters Points race final, Silver in the scratch race and silver in the 4000m Team Pursuit final. Keogh’s other team mates in the Team Pursuit final were Stu Thomas Justin Stott and Chris Henderson. Henderson claimed another medal in the final of the Mens Masters 1 Scratch race with Stu Thomas fourth.
Glenda Bruce, was happy enough with the two pb’s and the bronze medal in the Womens Masters 2 Individual Pursuit final. This was the first time this event for Masters Women has been held at National level and it’s inclusion was received with delight and support. It has previously only been a demonstration event for Masters Women.
Chris Ross also rode two pb’s and claimed silver in his 4000m Individual Pursuit final. Ross then went on to win bronze in the final of the time trial. Ross another newcomer to pursuiting has his sights set on the world championships.

Race report -
27 February 2010 - Steve Havard
Brutal heat and a seemingly continuous wind in there faces was what faced the riders around the gruelling 18 km Berwick circuit this weekend, with the timing system all go it was a race all the way to the finish even if they had been dropped from the pace. In Cat 1 a group of 8 got away from the others who got scattered around the course with the 4th and last accent of the Berwick climb 3 riders got away from the remaining riders, with the line in sight Shane Melrose unleashed his power in the sprint to take the win from Joe Chapman and Scott Lyttle in third. Cat 2's field split after the first lap with riders chasing in vain to try and catch the front group, with every climb of the Berwick hill riders hauled themselves back into there respective groups. As the last corner approached Andrew Riddel made a break for it with Mark Deacon on his wheel, Stu Thomas tried in vain to catch them in the sprint and held onto third with Deacon unable to get in front of eventual winner Riddel. Karl Larsen of Cat 3 didn't want to wait for the sprint finish and broke away from the rest on the last lap to take the win from Jan Brosnahan by 10 seconds. George Evans in Cat 4 won by 3 seconds from Kevin Harris and Dave McLeod respectively over there 36km 2 lap race.
Bailey Koppert- Duggan back from an bad crash late last year won the Junior Handicap event from improving by the week rider Denton Hayward.
Even the small kids completed a whole 18km lap in the windy conditions.

Chapman sprints in Spessot
- Saturday 16th Jan 2010
It came down to a sprint battle between the 'new dads' for this weekends race around the Fortex block. After 5 laps of a wind harrowing course Joe Chapman took out the sprint from Mark Spessot. Chapman had managed to creep away off the front on the tailwind section down School road on the third lap, Geoff Keogh bridged the gap with Chris Henderson on his wheel marking the move. These three joined together and began lapping it out to build a lead on the chasing field. Spessot had missed the move yet wanted to be a part of such a group so road across to the leading three. Realising the threats in the front group Spessot wound the speed up every time he hit the front of the bunch who at the end of lap 3 had a 25 second advantage. When the wind was the strongest the front group were still managing 42kmph!! Four riders became three after another Spessot turn on the front was just too much for Henderson who tried to catch back up down school road but to no avail. Into the final lap the three at the front had a substantial lead of the the bunch behind and Chapman took the honors, Keogh taking third place. A newly built Shane Melrose sprinted in the rest of the field to take forth place.
In the Cat 3 race Geoff Robinson had a go coming over the line with one lap to go but the field chased him down, new rider Rangi Wharepapa powered away from the field with 150 metres to go to take the win from Graham Gliddon and Teanen in third. Cat 4&5 had a handicapp race with Kevin Harris riding most of the 3 lap race on his own finishing just under the 5 minutes that he was set off before the chasers. Dave McLeod came in second with George Evans third, Carole Evans also had a strong ride all good preparation for the up and coming Masters Games.
