Race Report for Saturday 14th June 2008
by Glenda Bruce
There were plenty of mud splattered faces at the finish of the Otago Knitwear sponsored race on Saturday. Most of Category 1 stayed together for much of the race. There were
a few breakaway attempts by Jeff Notman and David Ayres, the remaining bunch letting them go for some time before they pulled them back in. Jon Richardson, Chris Henderson and
Brendon Hastie also tried it on but were pulled back in again. Kevin Thomson had a good fast race doing his share of the work and a muddy kit to prove it. However, in the
end it was young Brad Evans that took first place, chasing hard on his heels was Chris Henderson second and Alex Danials third. Brad Evans also won King of the Mountain.
In Category 2 the work was shared around until a few riders were dropped on the Berick Hill, including Stu Thomas who punctured. Tony Chapman made an attack up the hill on the
second lap but was soon caught by the bunch again. Dave Cormack, Tony Chapman and David Lont all helped keep the pace on. Eight riders were there at the sprint finish, David Cormack first, Andy Connolly second and Katri Laike third. Katri was also the first rider over the Berick hill to win the Queen of the Mountain prize. In Category 3, Tony Gamble, Barry Ellis, Ross Gamble, Jon Palenski, Jan Brosnahan, Honor Davies and Steve Green all
worked hard together, maintaining a pace that dropped almost half the feild of riders throughout the course of the race. Seven riders were there at he sprint finish with Honor
Davies getting to the line first, Ross Gamble second and David Clark third. Steve Green won King of the Mountain. Category 4 was a handicap race with Dave McLeod taking the honours this week, Larry Greene Second and Arthur Wade third. Arthur Wade rode well keeping the pace on from start to finish. Sheryn McLeod had to make do with fourth place
this week, however she finished in the sprint with the other placegetters.
Patrick Jones kept his winning streak going to win the Juniors race. This was Patrick's fourth win in a row. Fred Brooks rode a very good race coming in a well deserved second, with Regan King third. Cycle Surgery Time Trial - Sunday 15th June, 2007 Cycle Surgery held the first 20km time trial race of the Series yesterday on Huntley Road, Outram. Alex McGregor took fastest time in the Senior Mens race in a time of 26.43 Paul Gough - 29.52 was fastest time in the Veteran Men's Category. In the Open Women's Category, Emma Masterton's absent with illness allowed Glenda Bruce the fastest time of 35.44 and Patrick Jones had a big weekend having a fastest time of 14.49 in the under 15 Boys race. Amy Pearce was fastest Under 15 girl and Charlotte Kelly was fastest Senior Girl.

Sat 7th June 2008    Fairweather does it again!
Bitterly howling winds greeted the 35 riders for this weeks 53km handicap cycle race from Green Island to Taieri Mouth and return. The Limit marks headed off followed by second limit 8 minutes behind them, however it was the riders on the second break who set off at a blistering speed taking 4 minutes out of the group in front by Brighton.  The Break group worked hard to close the gap with Paul Hoskin, Steve Havard and Wayne Evans putting in some hard laps trying to close the gap.  The Scratch group set off 5 minutes behind break and by the turn at Taieri Mouth they had break in there sights, however with the turn came a rest from the wind and it was a relief to be heading back with the wind slightly behind the riders.  Scratch did there job at 40km and caught Break, coming into Brighton the chasing field was 40 seconds behind the front group.  Up the Brighton hill caught a couple of riders out and the scratch group wound up the pace to close the deficit.  Waldronville was the defining moment for the race with the whole field coming together and so the gallop to Green Island was on.  As the finishing line approached the only other obstacle to the finish line was a reversing truck, everyone used caution to pass and the sprint was on with Fairweather taking another victory clear of Alex McGregor and Patrick Williamson in third.  Paul Hoskin came in a deserved forth for all his hard work and young Brad Evans sprinted in David Eyre for 5th place.
In the junior race Patrick Jones completed the Brighton to Taieri Mouth and return course in first place and in the fastest time with Sophie Williamson in second and the fastest girl finished just in front of Fred Brookes and Colton Lambert.  In the B grade junior race Kyle Tarleton came in a deserving 1st.

The skies dried up for 77 riders on Saturday for the Mass start race at North Taieri.
It was fast and furious from the word go in the Category One race.  Alex McGregor, Geoff Keogh, Jeff Notman and Paul Whitley were prominent and consistent breakaway riders.  Brendon Hastie did a job well done in closing the gaps and bringing them all back together.  The feild was altogether again at the end for the big bunch sprint.  Chris O'Connor lead out  with James Fairweather on his wheel.  O'Connor doing his job well to give Fairweather the win, Chris Henderson 2nd and even after being out in front for 15km on their own, Keogh and Whitley took 3rd and 4th respectively with Chris O'Connor 5th.  A puncture was unfortunately the end result for Peter Bullings trip up from Invers for the race.
Category Two held a fast steady pace, all staying together from wo to go.  Tony Chapman did a bit more than his share of the work, only to get boxed in at the finish.  John Holvey was first, David Lont second, Tony Chapman third, Sequoia Cooper fourth and Jeremy Furlong fifth.
Category Three all stayed together too for much of the race, however stirring things up in the bunch were Steve Green, Jan Brosnahan, Sophie Williamson and John Polenski who all constantly made active breakaway attempts, only to be hauled back in again each time by the rest of the feild.  It was Sophie Williamson who powered away in the final finish to decisively win the race with Barry Ellis second, Kate McDonald third, Tom Campbell fourth and Tony Gamble fifth.
The Masters grade held a handicap race with Nat Fraser first, Lucy Spowart second, Larry Greene third and George Evans and Dave McLeod fourth and fifth.

Otago Time Trial races, held 15th September 2007
In blustery warmish conditions on the Pigroute in East Otago. Unfortunately the road was in a state of disrepair at the beginning of the ride, so we moved the start out by approx 2kms. This resulted in some of the usual safe turns been compromised, so some of the distances may have been slightly out. However, safety first for the riders. Thanks to all who gave of their time to assist, in particular, and in no specific order, Bill Hollick, Yvonne Coughlin, Pat Flett, Tony Freeman, Peter Notman, Neil King, Mike Lormans. It is unfortunate that so many riders rely on so few others to keep the racing safe for everybody. If you are not riding, howabout offering to do something. If we got more offers then all marshalls would have a shorter spell at officiating. This also takes the stress off those very few regulars who have to organize a large event with very few officers.
