The Dean Cooksley Memorial Handicap was the first classic of Cycling Otago’s 2020 race calendar, and we’ve brought it forward to finish off the 2020 race season too. This edition of the race is generously sponsored by Flex Fitness Green Island, who’ve provided us with $1000 in prizes up for grabs.

The race is a 60km belter along the south coast from Green Island to Taieri Mouth, with hills and stiff cross winds to sort the chaff from the wheat. The race favours strength and speed, finishing with a grunty climb up Jeffcoates Rd, in homage to Dean Cooksley’s Tour of Southland stage win up Bluff Hill. Thus, the race is a fitting tribute to the man who gives the race its name.
