Darren Wispinski had cycling in his veins from the age of 12. The obsession, passion and determination followed his cycling career right throughout his life. As a novice, he raced all over NZ, Southland Tours, Tamahini Tours, Criteriums, Nationals, Queenstown Snowline Tours, Hydro Grand and more. At the age of 19 he rode for the Belguim La Redoute Team while living in Gent for two seasons and racing the amateur Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Belgium.
Returning home, the experience, determination and competitiveness showed in his transition into A Grade. Darren was a well-respected rider and team competitor, although sprinting wasn’t his thing, he excelled at hill climbing and longer events. In the summer of 1998, Darren was diagnosed with leukaemia, the biggest race of his life was yet to come… his endurance, determination and love of his family saw him survive a 27-year cancer battle! The Memorial Handicap event will recognise 1 year since Darren’s passing.
Karen his wife, and his three daughters Ruby, Stella and Lucy, invite you to race in honour of Darren, an event they intend on holding with Cycling Otago for many years to come.
